Sports Medicine Q & A

What is sports medicine?

Sports medicine focuses on your recovery after incurring an injury that prevents you from participating in physical activities and training.

Dr. Dewan has specialized training and considerable experience in diagnosing and treating injuries that can result from sports and other forms of exercise. Some of the sports injuries Dr. Dewan sees most often include:

  • Ankle sprains
  • Muscle strains
  • Achilles tendinitis
  • Fractures (broken bones)
  • Shin splints
  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears
  • Medial collateral ligament (MCL) tears
  • Meniscus tears
  • Dislocations
  • Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)
  • Golfer's elbow (medial epicondylitis)
  • Patellofemoral pain syndrome (runner's knee)

As well as treating your injuries, sports medicine expert Dr. Dewan helps to prevent injuries by advising you on how to properly warm-up, exercise and train, and look after your overall health.

How are sports medicine problems diagnosed?

At your consultation, Dr. Dewan asks you about how the injury occurred and what symptoms you’re experiencing. He looks at your medical history as well and carries out a physical examination.

You might also need to undergo diagnostic tests, for example, X-rays, ultrasound, a CT scan, or an MRI scan. These can confirm a diagnosis and allow Dr. Dewan to see the extent of any damage to your bones or other tissues.

It's vital to get sports injuries checked out if they result in limited movement, moderate to severe pain, visible deformity, or a mild condition that doesn’t improve after a few days.

If you persevere with training or playing despite the pain and other symptoms, you could make the problem significantly worse. You're also more likely to develop degenerative problems like osteoarthritis if you don't take care of your injuries.

How are sports medicine problems treated?

You can help yourself by following the PRICE guidance whenever you experience an injury. PRICE stands for:

  • Protection
  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation

Following PRICE might be all you need to do for a minor injury. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can also help reduce pain and swelling. Don't use them to mask the pain so you can carry on playing, though, or you could make your injury much worse.

If you need to see Dr. Dewan, he uses conservative treatments for sports injuries that include:

  • Immobilization
  • Physical therapy
  • Steroid injections
  • Hyaluronic acid injections (viscosupplementation)
  • Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy
  • Stem cell therapy

If these approaches are unsuccessful or you have a condition that isn't treatable using nonsurgical methods, Dr. Dewan may suggest surgery for your condition.

He uses cutting-edge arthroscopic techniques to perform knee, shoulder, elbow, and ankle ligament repair and surgeries like shoulder labral repair. His focus is always on a rapid but safe return to play for athletes using the least invasive methods possible.
