Hip Replacement Q & A

What is a hip replacement?

A hip replacement is a surgical procedure you might need if you have severe hip problems and no other treatments are providing the relief you need.

Dr. Dewan provides a range of conservative treatments for hip pain and dysfunction, but for some patients, symptoms can become intolerable. If there are no less invasive alternatives, a hip replacement can be an effective way to resolve the problem.

Total hip replacement involves removing the end of your femur, the long bone in your thigh. This bone has a ball-shaped end (femoral head) that fits into a socket in your pelvis. Dr. Dewan also replaces the lining of the socket to form a new hip joint. With a partial hip replacement, Dr. Dewan only replaces the femoral head, not the socket.

Why might I need a hip replacement?

The most common reason why you might need a hip replacement is arthritis.

There are many types of arthritis, but the one that affects more people than any other is osteoarthritis. With this condition, the layers of cartilage on your bones gradually erode over the years, leaving the bones unprotected.

Some wear-and-tear is natural as you age, but if the ends of your bones lose too much cartilage, the joints become inflamed, painful, and stiff. The autoimmune condition rheumatoid arthritis also causes severe joint pain that might affect your hips.

Acute trauma — for example, an auto accident where you suffer severe hip damage — or a condition like avascular necrosis (bone death) might also require a hip replacement.

How is hip replacement surgery carried out?

There are several ways to carry out a hip replacement procedure.

Traditionally, a surgeon would perform hip replacement surgery using the posterior approach. This involves making an incision in the buttock to get to your hip joint. An alternative method of accessing the hip is with the lateral approach, which involves making the incision in the side of your body.

Dr. Dewan uses a minimally invasive approach through the anterior route whenever possible. This involves making small incisions in the front of the leg to access your hip.

What are the advantages of minimally invasive hip replacement surgery?

One of the many advantages of minimally invasive anterior hip replacement is that it causes less tissue damage. That means:

  • Less pain
  • Less bleeding
  • Less risk of complications
  • Smaller scars

Faster recovery is one of the chief benefits of a minimally invasive approach. With his superior surgical skills, you could soon be back on your feet after hip replacement surgery with Dr. Dewan.
